Edith Valerae (nee Collins) DoneyEdith Valerae (nee Collins) Doney, passed away on Monday, September 17, after an extended illness at age 94 in the Village of St. Edward Nursing Facility. She had enjoyed an active life as a resident in the Independent Living facility until moving in March to the Nursing area.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1913, the daughter of William and Edith Collins, she graduated from Perry High School and moved to Akron at age 21. Preceeded in death by her beloved husband, Michael, whom she married in 1936 at the Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, her parents, and only brother Vernon (Bud) Collins.
Mourning her passing are her children, Barbara (Dick) Boston, Joyce (John) Ensign, Michael (Beth) Doney. Her loving grandchildren, Mark (Pam) Boston, Christine (Pat) Brown, Michael
(JoAnn) Boston, Curt Boston, L. Jennifer (Doug) Cassel, Megan (John) Barrett, Mandy (Brian) Stano, Lisa (Jason) Ulery; blessed great grandchildren, Josh, Heather, Shannon, Dominic, Tyler, Michael, Adam and Ryan; surviving also are sisters in law, Virginia Suto, Helen Lesniak, and Jackie Doney; also 25 nieces and nephews and their families; several cousins and their families; and many extended family and friends.

Valerae was a very active member of the Church of the Master (Methodist). She was a member of the Women's Society and Adah Circle, had taught Sunday School, attended seminars, and was an original member of the "chicken pickers" who organized and served free lunches to those in need.

Val retired from Akron City Hospital and had also been a volunteer for several years. She had enjoyed being a member of ABWA and AARP and had many happy experiences on trips with her husband and brother Bud. For years Val was a very active member of the PT A serving as president at Spicer School. She was a Girl Scout Leader for years, as well as Y-Teen Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. Camping with family and friends was a special joy as she always loved nature especially birds and trees. Val was an avid reader her whole life and loved English and family history.

A gentle and loving lady who always found the best in everyone she will be greatly missed by her family and friends. May she rest in peace knowing she was the very best ever mother, grandmother and great grandma.

The family wishes to thank all the St. Edwards caregivers who have been so kind and loving to our mother. The staff, nurses, aids, and Sister Bea have all given Valerae the best of care. Many thanks also to the Summa Hospice Staff who were so helpful and caring and made her last days as comfortable as possible. Thanks to our beloved church family for the prayers, cards, calls, and to our extended families for their many kindnesses.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M. SATURDAY at the Church of the Master, 800 East Market Street, Akron, OH 44305, with Rev. Kenneth Moody-Arndt and Rev. Michael Shaub officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 East Market St., FRIDAY from 4 until 7 P.M. and one hour before the service time at the church.
