Loving Memory
Susan
A. Serves
Susan A. Serves, 55, passed away February 2, 2009 after a brief battle
with
cancer. She was born in Akron to the late Sam (who preceded her in death
just 4 months ago) and Neda D. (Novak), both to whom she was a selfless
and
dedicated care-giver. She graduated from Ellet High School and later
earned
her Master's Degree from the University of Akron, where she was also
a
member of the women's basketball team.
Susan recently retired from the
Akron Public School System with 33 years of
service. She began her teaching career at Goodyear Middle School but
served
the majority of her time as the head of the Restaurant Management program
at
East High School. In fact, many of her students competed in state culinary
tournaments under her guidance. She always took great pride in helping
students, whether it be in her role as an advisor to Student Council,
her
deep involvement in school extracurriculars, or in the various sports
she
coached.
Susan was, amongst other things, a gourmet pastry chef and was
always trying
to perfect her culinary skills, even attending the well-renowned culinary
school in Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Akron Junior Womens Civic
Club (JWCC), was an avid golfer and traveler, and enjoyed gardening and
bowling.
Above all, Susan treasured her family and friends. She made a lasting
impression to anyone lucky enough to know her, and she will be deeply
missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her uncles,
Jim
Serves and Doyle Basford and aunt, Rosalie Basford. She is survived by
her
aunt, Tula Serves; sisters, Sandra Burrell and Sharon Mraz; nieces and
nephews, Joshua and Emily Smith, Kyle (Danielle) Mraz, and Chad Mraz;
great-niece, Monroe Mraz; cousins, Cindy, Doug, Paula, Bobbie, Julie
(Stan),
Lisa, Fran and Bob; and her beloved pets, Buddy and Diamond.
The family
would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. William Demas
and Dr. Sameer Mahesh for their wonderful care of Susan during a most
difficult time.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7,
2009, at 11:30
a.m., at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with
Father
Jerry Hall officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral
home
on Friday, February 6, from 3 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be
made to One of a Kind Pets, 1699 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44313, The
Haven
of Rest, 175 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44308 or to Team Jam P.O. Box 2472,
Streetsboro, OH 44241.
