George Helmstedter Obituary

George A. Helmstedter, 90, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2019, at Summa City Hospital from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. George was born in Barberton on May 25, 1928 to Levi and Francis (Nagel) Helmstedter. He was a lifelong resident of the Barberton/Akron area and graduated from Coventry High School in 1947. George served in the U.S. Army for two years and afterward, married Peggyan Staire in 1953. George loved life and enjoyed talking with everyone he met. He was an avid Ohio State football fan and attended many games, including two bowl games. George acquired his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. He was an entrepreneur at heart and ran George’s Dairy Store in Ellet from the late 1950’s to 1978. His next venture was George’s Carry Out and Laundromat on Exchange Street, owned from 1978 to 1988. He enjoyed many hunting ventures with brother-in-law Buck, and son-in-law Tony, and loved riding his bike whenever he could. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy; brother- in- law, George Greenwald; sisters-in-law, Mary Staire and Ivene Moats; and brother and sister-in-law, Charles “Buzz” and Donna Staire. Left to cherish his memory are wife of 65 years Peggyan; son, Barry (and ex-wife Kathy Cameron) of Akron; daughter, Sherri (Tony) Stevenson of Franklin, TN; grandchildren, Eric (Ann Marie) of Tallmadge, Brandi (Ryan) Winnett of Uniontown, brothers-in-law, Paul Moats, Sr. and Forrest “Buck” (Patty) Staire of Barberton; nephews, Garry (Beth) Greenwald and family of Stow, Rick (Kate) Greenwald and family of Cincinnati, Jeff Moats, Paul Moats Jr. (Renata); nieces, Cindy (Ed) Reichelt and family, Jennifer Staire and family, Amy Czepan, Lori (Trevor) Lawson and family; two great-grandchildren; special neighbor, Jennie Laconi; special friends, Charlie Mashburn, Bill Wilcox, Whitey Jacobs, Jack Walchuck and countless other friends. Our family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Danielle Ingram, Joann and Don of Summa City Hospital Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Haven of Rest or American Lung Association. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home & Chapel, 760 E. Market St.  The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 15 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Joe Burkhardt officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
