Gordon W. Huber, of Cuyahoga Falls, peacefully passed away on June 26, 2017 at the age of 90, with his family by his side.

He was born on November 1, 1926, the son of Arthur and Minnie (Jordon) Huber, and was raised in Akron, graduating from West High School.  In 1945, he was called by the Army to serve in occupied Japan for almost two years.

When Gordon returned home, he attended the University of Akron on the GI Bill, and graduated with majors in chemistry and Spanish.  His chemistry career started at General Tire, then moved to PPG Industries, and he retired from The Oak Rubber Company in Ravenna.

College is where he met his future wife, Jeanne Case, at a sorority picnic.  She thought “he looked interesting.” They married six months later and after they both finished college, started their family. Their lifelong love for each other lasted 63 years until her death in 2012.

Gordon was first and foremost a family man.  But he was also a bibliophile who developed his passion for books and reading when he was a young boy.  He was a reader, a buyer, a seller, and a collector.  His specialties, early children series books and pulp magazines brought him great joy throughout his life.  He was active in the Northern Ohio Bibliophilic Society, Akron Antiquarian Book Fair, Horatio Alger Society, Zane Grey’s West Society, Burroughs Bibliophiles, and the Sherlock Holmes Society.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Akron, serving on the Building and Grounds Committee, volunteering in their food bank, and serving as Boy Scout leader for Troop 14 for many years. He was also a member of the Summit County Historical Society and a long-time volunteer at the John Brown House.  He enjoyed playing bridge with friends and visiting antique and book stores, looking for that elusive book that may have been missing from his collection.  He and Jeanne hiked so many fall hiking spree trails that their shields would not all fit on their hiking staffs.  In his younger days, he enjoyed golf, playing on the General Tire softball team, camping, and taking and developing photographs in his dark room.

Gordon is survived by his sons, Dr. Robert Huber of Uniontown and Dr. Thomas Huber of Macon, Georgia; and daughter Nancy Coerver (Timothy) of Hartville.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home & Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Dr. Mark Ruppert officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, from 10 – 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Summit County Historical Society of Akron, Ohio, 550 Copley Road, Akron, Ohio  44320.
