Betty Jane Matay, 88, passed away January 25, 2013. She was born in Cleveland, OH to the late Edwin and Wanda (Barnes) Cook and lived in Cleveland, California and Akron.
Betty graduated from West High School in Cleveland and was a bookkeeper for many years with the Operating Engineers Union. In the “Big Band” era, she was an accomplished Jazz singer. She was also a long-time member of the Garden Club at Stan Hywet Hall and volunteered with the Salvation Army/Ladies Auxiliary of Akron.
She is survived by her son, George Gerrity; grandchildren, Riley, Travis and Mariah Gerrity; and sister, Shirley Cagno.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St. with Captain Doug Dolder of the Salvation Army officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Summa, 444 N. Main Street, Akron, OH 44310.
