Dorothy Jane Bair, 80, passed away January 11, 2014. She was born June 4, 1933 in Dover Ohio, to the late Kermit and Virginia (Maybaugh) Bair. Dorothy was born again to a new life in Christ at age 19. She attended services and became active in The Salvation Army Corps in Akron Ohio. Dorothy enrolled as a Soldier/Member of the Akron Citadel Corps. Miss Bair responded to God’s call to become an Officer/Pastor and was prepared for full-time service at The Salvation Army’s School for Officers Training in New York City. She was commissioned/Ordained in June, 1954, and served in various corps in Ohio. Responding to the call of God once more, she prepared herself for service in Africa. Dorothy worked for God in Africa for 20 plus years. Health problems made it necessary for her to return to the U.S.A. to serve the Lord at “Home”. However, “home” was as much in Africa as Ohio for Dorothy. She loved the people and the work In Africa. Wherever Dorothy served she was known for her deep love of God and people, sprinkled generously with joy and humor. After 41 years as an Officer she “retired” to serve God actively in the Akron Citadel Corps, where she held several positions as a lay leader and volunteer. She also became active in grading Correspondence Bible Study courses that The Salvation Army offers to men and women in prisons. She felt challenged and wrote some new courses for The Salvation Army. She always enjoyed teaching and often incorporated this into her work.
Dorothy will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother, and two sisters in law. She is survived by brother, Richard “Dick” Bair; Sister in law, Patricia “Pat” Bair; nieces Vickie Bair Roth (Steve) their three sons and two granddaughters; Beverly Bair Roberts (Bruce) ; their two daughters and grandchildren, and nephews Richard “Rick” Bair (Diane) and their children , Katy, Craig Bair and Micky Oakley, and Richard “Dick” Bair and his family.
