Elsie (Pishney) Ziegler

April 3, 1917 — January 9, 2011

Elsie Ziegler, 93 of Akron, passed away Sunday, January 9, 2011 at The Merriman.

Born in Charleroi, PA to the late John and Anna Pishney, the family moved to Akron when she was a child.  She married Percy J. Ziegler in 1936 and enjoyed their journey for 57 years.  Their passion was photography as a hobby.

Elsie and Perc were Charter Members of the Akron Camera Club.  Elsie was a skilled veteran color photographer and specialized in landscapes and close-ups of nature.  Perc specialized in black and white photographs, so they would not compete against one another.  Elsie had the honor of being the first woman in the history of the Akron Camera Club to win first place in the advanced print competition in April 1944 with her first place award of her beautiful composition of “Morning Stroll”.  During the World War II effort, Elsie worked at Metzger’s Photo Supply.  After that, she was a housewife and looked forward to their next adventure seeking unique photos.  In 1976 she won second prize in an Eastman Kodak Company national color slide competition, which enabled them to take a trip thru Europe.  Over the years, she received many awards and recognition of her color pictures and slides.  Elsie and Perc were also members of the Western Reserve Pictorialists.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Perc Ziegler; brothers, Edward, Victor P. and first wife Helen, and John, of Tucson, AZ; and brothers-in-law, Walter Schreiber and John (Marge) Ziegler, of Ft. Myers, FL.  Surviving her is her sister, Eleanor Schreiber; sisters-in-law, Ruby Pishney and Marge Pishney of Tucson, AZ; nephews, Joe (Coleen) Schreiber, Victor T. Pishney (Anna Stastny) and John (Annie) Ziegler, of Ft. Myers, FL; nieces, Patty (Jim) Eaglewolf, Fran (Bob) Butcher, Sandee (Lewis) Corbett of Tucson, AZ, Starla (Dan) Boyd of Norman, OK, and Mary Ellen (Andrew) Hahn of Prosper, TX; and many other great-nephews and great-nieces.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011, at 10 a.m., at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Pastor Deborah Wissner officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. Calling hours will be on Thursday, January 13, from 4 – 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Arthritis Foundation.
