George L. Wigington, 66, passed away June 10, 2011. He was born in Akron on March 19, 1945 to the late George K. and Dorothy (Newman) and was a lifelong resident. He was a veteran of the US Navy and retired as a Deputy Sheriff/Detective from the Summit County Sheriffs Department with 30 years of service.

George was very active in the community as he was a member of Grace Bible Church, VFW Firestone Post 3383 and the Wayfarer Masonic Lodge 789. He also loved traveling to many different places as a devout fisherman and was an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sandy, and brother-in-law, Dick. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan; children, Justin, Denise (Rich) and Darlene (Mark); two grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Nathan and Amber; brother, Kenneth (Janet) and their children, Chris and Erica; sister, Marilyn and her children, Rick and Tracy; nieces and nephews, Tammy, Mark and Sherry; brother-in-law, Harry; former wife, Sharon; and his best friend of 46 years, Bill.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 6 p.m. at Grace Bible Church, 5781 Manchester Rd., with Rev. Jerry Harpool officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for 3 hours prior to the service, from 3 – 6 p.m.  A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park, 1025 Canton Rd., with military honors conducted by Firestone VFW Post 3383.
