Harriet L. Thornton, 92, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Akron on December 23, 1923, the youngest daughter of Birtus and Minnie (Morrow) Warner and was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Thornton; son, Gerald; sisters, Jessie and Marguerite; son-in-law, Eugene “Buddy”; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth “Beth”.
Mom we will dearly miss you: your children, Denny (Millie), Nancy, Jimmy (Cindy, favorite daughter-in-law) and Scott (Fran, other favorite daughter-in-law); eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; nephew, Bruce Collins (Marilyn); and niece, Rosemarie Sherbine.
Our mom was the kindness, sweetest, most compassionate woman you would ever meet. She would do anything for anyone who asked. Her greatest joy came from loving and devoting her life to her husband, children and their children. She loved playing Bingo, going to the movies, Texas Hold’em, going to the Casinos and Myrtle Beach. She enjoyed her high school friends, whom she met monthly for many years before her diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, and she was one of the oldest living members of Wedgewood United Methodist Church, a church family she loved greatly.
Mom & Family were comforted and cared for by the staff of Hospice of VNS; we thank you for everything. We would also like to thank the many years of care that Dr. Mark Smith provided. A VERY SPECIAL thank you to our sister Nancy, who mom lived with. Nancy you took such great care of our MOM and we can’t thank you enough.
The family will receive friends on Monday, June 6, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home and Chapel, 760 E. Market St. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 7, at 11 a.m., Rev. Joseph Burkhardt officiating, with burial at Rose Hill Burial Park immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of VNS or the Akron area Alzheimer’s Assoc.
