Jack L. Newell, 83, passed away April 15, 2011. He was born in Toledo, OH and raised by his mother and step-father, Florence and Albert Johnson. An Akron resident for most of his life, he was a veteran of the US Army, retired from Babcock and Wilcox with 37 years of service and belonged to the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association.
After his retirement, Jack moved to Freeport, OH and was very active in the local senior citizens groups. He was an avid golfer and hunter, and enjoyed working in his huge garden.
Jack will be sadly missed by his companion of many years, Mary VanDuzer; children, Janet Sorenson, Richard Newell, David Stiles and Sharon (Gordon) Shaffer; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 281. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for ONE HOUR prior to the service, from 10 – 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Barberton, 797 N. Court St., Medina, OH 44256.
