John F. “Bud” Haberkost Jr. departed this life for his heavenly home on July 6, 2011, after a long illness.
The son of John F. Sr. and Lillie M. (Kroeger) Haberkost, John was born in Akron on August 17, 1916. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances “Fran”; son, Michael (Pam), of Canal Fulton; daughters, Sherry (Tim) Eddingfield, of Troy, OH and Judy (Tim) Sikora, of Kettering, OH; grandchildren, Jonathan (Stephanie), of Lexington, KY, Jason, of Kettering and Terri, of Marietta, GA; and special cousins, Lyn and Earl Evans and Karen Gerhold, of FL.
John graduated from West High School, worked at B.F. Goodrich, then went to work for Del-Franklin Dry Cleaners. He was only there a short time due to World War II. He was inducted into the Army on August 11, 1942 and was first stationed in Louisiana with the 902 H.A.M. Co. He was then sent to a special automotive school in Detroit to learn how to work on the big Army trucks. After going overseas, he was transferred into the HQ Co. 357th INF REGT, serving in Central Europe – Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland-Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge). He received several medals, including the Bronze Star.
After returning home, he went back to Del-Franklin and retired after 40 years of service, plus 11 years at Pilgrim Square Cleaners.
Bud loved sports and was an avid golfer. The best part of golf was when his son, Mike, could meet him after work and they could spend “quality time” together. At one point in his life he didn’t miss a Browns game for 13 years. He liked baseball and also got to see Mike play softball and he enjoyed going to Canada every year for a week of fishing with his “fishing buddies”. He was on the church bowling team and loved to play cards – in later years at the Firestone Community Center.
He was very active in church, serving in various capacities. He was the last CHARTER member of Grace Lutheran Church, where his father was one of the founders, and has been a member of St. John Lutheran since 1967.
John was a big tease and had a sense of humor that some liked and some didn’t, but he was a well-loved man and will be missed dearly by family and friends. He was a great husband, father and grandfather.
Our thanks to Dr.’s Jeffrey Eckman and staff and Dr. William Bauman and staff for their care of John through the years and to the 4th and 7th floor staffs of St. Thomas and Hospice of Summa for the past 3 weeks. God bless you for your kindness and excellent care.
Calling hours will be Monday, July 11, 2011, from 4 – 6 p.m. with a celebration of life service immediately following at 6 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Rev.
