Judy Promey, 77, passed away June 7, 2026. She was born in Akron to the late Harold and Jean (Stanley) Hardy and was a Woodridge High School graduate.
Judy was a small but mighty Child of God. She was outspoken, independent, and did things her way. Her enthusiasm for teaching and the Lord were boundless.
Born into a working-class family, she was determined to be a teacher from childhood. School was a challenge for her but she excelled and earned two BS degrees from the University of Akron: Elementary Education and Special Education. She distinguished herself so well that she became a member of Pi Lambda Theta, an honors society in education.
She spent her early years in the Southeast School District and eventually joined Akron Public Schools, where she spent 30 years.
I called her the “Pied Piper” of APS. Her students loved her and “her kids” would just come up and hug her. She had a way to get through to troubled kids and helped turn around many troubled lives. She made a difference. She loved “her kids”.
She also loved animals, spending many years with the Portage County APL both as a board member and home fostering.
I was so proud of her. We were married 53 years. She was my only love, my best friend and we all will miss her dearly.
Per her wishes, cremation has taken place.
