Miriam L. Jones, 86, passed away peacefully August 20, 2011. She was born in Altoona, PA to the late Blair J. and Alice (Mellett) Smith and lived most of her life in Akron. She was an East High School graduate and worked at Quaker Oats before retiring from O’Neil’s Department Store with 40 years of service.
Miriam was a life member of Family of Faith Church where she was part of the Keenagers, was also a life member of the Airport VFW Auxiliary Post 8975, was a member of ABWA and was a past member of the Orioles Auxiliary 167. She also worked for the Election Board for 60 years, was a committee person for her district and most recently, had worked at the Goodyear Library. She enjoyed bowling in her early years and loved playing cards, especially Euchre.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Sylvester G., Blaine N. and Clyde N. Smith. She is survived by her loving children, Judith A. (Denny) Wood and Thomas M. Jones Sr.; grandchildren, Scott R. Wood and Leanne Ross of Huntington, WV, and Tammy M., Daphne L., Thomas Jr. “TJ” and Trinity Jones of Akron; 6 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to the 3rd floor staff of Falls Village and the Staffs of 4-North and 4-West at Akron City Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Rev. Ron Shultz officiating. Interment at East Akron Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home TODAY from 5 – 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ABWA Scholarship Fund, 534 Perry Rd., Tallmadge, OH 44278 or Family of Faith Church, 800 E.
