Opal G. Hyatt, 87, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2011.
Mom was born on a farm in McMinnville, Tennessee on August 20, 1923 to the late William and Martha (Youngblood) Tucker. Her family moved to Akron in 1934 and she worked at Firestone, Sun Rubber and Engineered Rubber Products, retiring in 1988.
Mom was a kind and caring person. She was a wonderful mother and mother-in-law and not one to meddle in other people’s business. Mom spoke calmly and carried a cast iron skillet. She reared three well behaved children and always kept her cookie jar filled with Oreo’s for her grandkids.
Mom would give guidance and advice when asked and had a way with words, such as “Son, you were brought up to know the difference between right and wrong. When you get a warm feeling in your heart, that’s your conscience telling you you’re about to do something right. When you get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, that’s your conscience telling you you’re about to do something wrong…and boy if you EVER get the two confused I will tear your little (butt) up!” Words to live by.
Mom was a homebody in retirement. She loved to go play penny bingo with her sister Pauline and watch the Braves and those damn Indians on TV.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Winslow, Cecil, Wylie and Doyle Tucker; twin daughter, Hazel Hazlett, and great-granddaughter, Marina Duckworth. She is survived by twin daughter, Mazel Duckworth; son, Timothy (Deborah); sister and bingo buddy, Pauline Shepherd; extra special sons-in-law, Howard Hazlett and Richard Duckworth; eight successful and grounded grandchildren: James (Cindy) Duckworth, Donald (Jesi) Hazlett, Jamie (Teresa) Hazlett, Barbara (David) Meyers, John Duckworth, Laura (Ken) Begue, Ronald (Melissa) Sears and Sarah (Mathew) Hutchison; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be Saturday, June 11, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market Street., with Rev. Scott Baker officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 10, from 5 to 7 p.m.
