Roland D. Hill Sr.

October 27, 1918 — August 2, 2013

Roland D. Hill, Sr., 94, husband, dad, grandpa, grandpa great, uncle, employee, friend, golfer and musician, passed away August 2, 2013.

Roland was born October 27, 1918 to the late John C. and Julia S. (Dewey) Hill in Akron, Ohio.  He attended the Akron Public Schools and graduated from East High.  He was employed by the Erie Railroad and Erie Lackawana Railroad for 40 years as a yard master and was a 60-year member of Canton, OH Masonic Association as a 32 degree Mason.

He married Leona Faye Rollins on June 25, 1938 and together they traveled the U.S. visiting friends and family, celebrating anniversaries and birthdays.  They also traveled extensively in Europe, Hong Kong, and cruised the Caribbean.  They loved visiting grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending many sporting events and recitals.  He continued these family visits after Leona’s death in 2001.

Preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Leona, he is survived by three children, Ron (Peg) Hill of Mogadore, OH, Judy (Jack) Simonetti of Toledo, OH, and Suzanne (Bob) Swinehart, of Allison Park, PA; special niece and nephew, Cindy Rasmussen of Birmingham, AL and Rick Rollins of Quincy, FL; grandchildren, Julie (Art) McCreary, Sherri (Chris) Dibble, Wendi (Mike) Pressler, Lynn (Jeff) Doty, Mark (Shannon) Simonetti, Terry (Frosty) Frost, Paul (Julie) Simonetti, Cori (Brandon) Schauer, and Stacy Swinehart; as well as 17 great-grandchildren.

Roland’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff of Wadsworth Pointe for their care in the later stages of his illness, and Shepard’s Gate (Hartville) for their care during the early stages of his illness.  They were all professional, competent and most of all, caring.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 9, 2013 from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 E. Market St. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Memorial Park with Chaplain Elizabeth Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Roland.
