William R. Shives

William R. Shives, 95, passed away September 5, 2012. He was born in Hancock, Maryland to the late John and Florence (Dawson) and lived most of his life in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. He was a US Army Glider Infantry Sergeant in the 17th Airborne Division during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. In thanks for his service, he received the Purple Heart and 3 Bronze Stars.

William was also very active in the community. He was a Met Life insurance agent for 43 years and a 65-year member of the Adoniram Joppa Masonic Lodge # 517. He was a charter member of the Akron Amateur Softball Hall of Fame, belonged to the 82nd Airborne Division Akron Chapter and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Finally, a crowning achievement for Bill was getting a hole-in-one at the age of 80.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses on Floor T-3 ICU at Akron City/Summa Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie; sons, James (Julie) and Bill (Debbie); granddaughters, Jessica (Bryan) Clough, Jennifer (Eric) Martens and Jill (Brian) Swain; and 4 great-grandchildren (with a 5th due in December).

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, with Rev. John Ballinger officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Summa Health Systems, T-3 ICU, 525 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44304
