George A. Vargo, 89, passed away November 21, 2022. He was born in Akron to the late Joseph and Helen (Doxey) Vargo, was a US Army veteran and retired from Ohio Bell with 30 years of service. He was also a long-time member of Family of Faith UMC and was a Mason for over 60 years.
George was a beautiful tenor singer, performing in several choirs at church, at the Goodyear Theater, and at various venues throughout the country. In retirement, he loved his home at the Kings Gate Club in Nokomis, FL, spending time at the family cottage on Devil Lake in Canada, and traveling with his wife Joan and the AT&T Pioneer Club. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, and siblings, Joseph II and John Vargo and Mary Henley. He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Coulter; children, Victoria (Scott) Mathews, Kimberly (Dan) Coulter, Jeffrey (Nancy) Vargo and Todd Vargo (Lisa); step-children, Pamela (Richard) Simmons, Brenda (Robert) Casciani, Barb (Rick) Arison and Robert (Jill) Simmons; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 4 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home and Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Pastor Ron Shultz and Pastor George Lee officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, from 3 - 4 p.m. Private family burial at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family of Faith UMC, 800 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44305 or the Alzheimer's Association.
