Harry Dale Spellman Sr.

Harry Dale Spellman Sr., 91, passed away at Summa City Hospital May 20,2022. He was born July 15, 1930 in Akron, OH to William and Gladys (Pifer) Spellman and married the love of his life, Irene (Scurtie) on July 20, 1950. They were married for 70 years until Irene passed away in 2021. He missed her dearly and often told others of his desire to be reunited with her.

Harry was a hard-working man who loved his family very much and was always generous with them. He showed his love by making sure when possible that they had whatever they needed and being there for them through all of their ups and downs. Harry often mentioned how he and Irene were blessed by their good and responsible three children. He was also very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Harry was a veteran of the Army and the Navy. After his military service, his occupations included truck driver, shoe salesman and computer programmer, and he was a member of Wedgewood United Methodist Church. Harry was generous and always willing to help out anyone in need. He was known for his joking and teasing manner, which stayed with him to the end and lightened the spirits of anyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene; their son, Harry Spellman Jr.; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, William and sister, Eleanor Schuck. He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Becky (Bob) Waltz and Suzette (Joe) Wolfe; grandchildren, Jeremiah (Carey) Bear, Erin Burtoft, Lauren (Steve) Martin, Joshua (Samantha) Wolfe, Matthew (Kelly) Wolfe, Joseph Wolfe, Caleb Wolfe, Hannah (Justice) Fair and Jacob Wolfe; and 17 great-grandchildren (with another due in July).

Harry’s family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Summa Hospice for the excellent care they provided him the last 18 months of his life. He especially loved his nurses, Gina and Mariann, and his aide, Jeremy, who became like family. And special thanks to Autumnwood Nursing Home for their loving care.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2 p.m. at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home and Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Pastor Joe Burkhardt officiating. Calling hours will be at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, from 1 – 2 p.m., with burial at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wedgewood UMC, 2350 Wedgewood Dr., Akron, OH 44312.
