Helen M. Johnson, 91, went home to be with the Lord April 1, 2021. She was born in Vannock, OH to the late Alfred and Iva (Pickens) Thompson and was a graduate of Barnesville High School. While she was still a student, she worked at Hunkers restaurant and in 1945, met a WWII veteran named William “Hodge” Johnson, whom she married in 1947. The couple moved to Akron shortly thereafter when Hodge got a job with Ford, and she lived there until 2018 when she relocated to Mulberry Gardens, a place she loved. Helen was a long-time active member of Family of Faith United Methodist Church, serving as Chairperson of Membership Care and working as part of the Free Lunch Bunch for many years. She was past President and Vice President of UMW and belonged to the Eve and Rachel Circles. She also sold Avon for a remarkable 57 years, winning numerous awards and becoming a member of the President’s Club. She was a fabulous cook, and shared her prized recipes for many years. Helen lived life to its fullest and she will be deeply missed. In addition to her parents and husband “Hodge”, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Diana “Susie” Harrison; brother, Stanley; and sister, Ruth. She is survived by her children, Don (Brenda), Kevin (Becki) and Kim (Eddie George); grandchildren, Sherrie (Aaron) Kramer, Jeff (Kim) Johnson and Vanessa (Jason) Walters; great-grandchildren, Corey, Allison, Madilynn, Sam, Elysia and Leah; brothers, Fred and Larry Thompson; special sister-in-law, Edna Morris; dear friend, Vonadell Mayton; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 12 noon at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home and Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Rev. Ron Shultz officiating. Calling hours will be at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, from 11 a.m. – 12 noon with burial at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family of Faith UMC c/o the Free Lunch Program, 800 E. Market St., Akron, OH 44305.
