Howard E. Shambach

Howard Eugene Shambach, just 103 days shy of his 100th birthday, went peacefully to be with his Lord April 3, 2023 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his devoted “Dream Team” of nieces and caretakers, Beth, Elizabeth, Jan, Jayme, Janet F, Janet M, Jerilynn and Susie. Born in Akron on July 15, 1923 to the late James C. and Anna B. (Young) Shambach, he was the 5th of 10 children. He graduated from Edinburg High School, often telling stories of playing 6-man football, and was one of the greatest generation, proudly serving as a Corporal in the Army Air Corps as a cook and baker during World War II. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber with over 41 years of service and was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church. Howard and his wife Vera (West), whom he married on October 6, 1962, loved to golf and bowl. He enjoyed farming and was an avid animal lover, feeding them daily and saying “they got to eat too!” He also enjoyed scratch off lottery tickets and an occasional trip to the casino. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Bernadette, Ruth (Delbert) King, Esther Whorley, Mildred Pishney and her twin, Martha, and Catherine Shewell, and brothers, George, Jim (Lynn) and Larry (Alice Mae). He is survived by his brother, Russell (Arlene); brother-in-law, Cork Whorley; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Summa Akron City Hospital 6th floor nurses and 3rd floor hospice team and to all the staff of Tamarac Ridge for their kind and wonderful care. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine Catholic Church, 1254 Grandview Rd., Lake Milton, OH 44429. Calling hours will be at church for one hour prior to the service, from 10 - 11 a.m.. Burial with military honors will follow at Palmyra West Cemetery.
