Mary Tahir, 95, died on Thursday, July 6, 2023, with close family there to witness her passing on. Mary was born in Akron, graduated from South High School, and attended Kent State University for two years before she married Ahmed Tahir, Sr., a WW2 Navy Veteran. They were married for 57 years when Ahmed died in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Francis Lewis; her son, Ahmed Tahir, Jr.; and grandson, Max Tahir. Survivors include her two daughters, Laura (Jose Guerrero) Tahir and Tayba (A.T. Powell); her sister, Peggy Glasgow; granddaughter, Mercedes Tahir; several nieces and nephews; special friends Dr. Luis and Kathy Tan; and many other loving extended relatives and friends.
Mary valued friends, family, and hard work. She volunteered at Akron City Hospital for many years prior to becoming office manager for Summa General Surgeon Dr. Luis Tan until she retired at age 89. In her free time she enjoyed quilting, reading, and travel. Mary was a long-time member of the Akron Woman’s City Club and was on the Women’s Auxiliary Board of Akron City Hospital for many years. She had strong religious convictions and preferred to worship on her own. She chose to have a private graveside reading of the scriptures with a small gathering of family members in lieu of calling hours. Mary lived a rich, full, meaningful life and will be missed by many.
