Thelma Kay Stoops, 78, passed away December 2, 2021. She was born in Massillon, OH to the late Robert Willis and Sarah Roberta (DeHass) Muir and was a Canton McKinley High School graduate.
Thelma Kay began pastoring for the Salvation Army at the age of 22 and had a long career serving many communities throughout the United States and Canada. She became a Salvation Army officer, rising to the rank of Major, and spent her life helping others. She will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Anthony Stoops and brother, Darryl Muir. She is survived by her sons, Kevin (Cheriann), Kendall (Melissa), Steven (Katie) and Todd (Angela); grandchildren, Frannie (Michael), Arthur (Amber), Treven, Brandon, Nicholas (Natalie), Jillian (Alfonso), Karissa (Christian), Shane, Kayla and Bethany (Drake); 20 great-grandchildren; siblings, Naomi, Timothy (Ginny), Marsha, Gretchen (Randy) and Dennis (Kathy); and many other loving relatives and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021 from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, 190 S. Maple St., Akron, OH 44302. The funeral service will immediately follow calling hours at 11 a.m. with Lt. Colonel James Reynolds officiating. Private interment will be held at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY at a later date.
