Vonadell Mayton, age 92, was called home to be with the Lord on June 23, 2022. She was born in Akron, Ohio to the late Hayward and Agnes (Martin) Phares, growing up there and graduating from Akron Central High School in 1949. Later that year she married her beloved Andrew Mayton. They moved to Mogadore, Ohio, in 1954 where they raised three children.
Vonadell was a life-long member of Family of Faith United Methodist Church in Akron, where she was active in many facets of church life, including children’s ministries and the United Methodist Women Rachel Circle. She was employed for many years at the East Market Day Nursery and several YMCA day-care facilities in the Akron area. She was also an active member of the Pythian Sisters organization most of her life, holding various leadership positions.
Vonadell would cheer at local spectator sports, especially for Mogadore football and basketball teams, and she loved marching bands. Swimming, crocheting and knitting were her favorite hobbies and travel was always an enjoyment, with family or with her good friend, Helen Johnson.
A favorite song of hers was “You Are My Sunshine”, and she certainly was a “sunshine” in our lives.
Vonadell was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Andrew Mayton, and sister, Marilyn (Jack) Hartline. She is survived by brother, James (Betty) Phares; sisters, Roberta Morrow and Nancy (Charles) Kelly; sons, Andrew (Wendy) Mayton II and John Mayton; daughter, Deborah (Craig) Jorstad; and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 1, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Family of Faith United Methodist Church, 800 E. Market St., Akron, OH, 44305, with Pastor Ron Schultz officiating. Interment follows at Hillside Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 E. Market St., Akron, OH on Thursday, June 30 from 5 - 7 p.m., and at the church for one hour before the funeral service. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Family of Faith UMC.
