Marlene Frances “Schoonie” “Babe” Schoonover was born June 5, 1931 and died April 23, 2018 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Irene (Egleston) Schoonover; brothers, Harold, Fred, Earl, and Richard; and nephew, Mark. She is survived by nieces, Gloria McCartt, Dana Singer and Sheri Merrow; nephews, Steve, Rick and Mike Schoonover; sister-in-law, JoAnn; longtime friend Billie Foley; and many great nieces and nephews.
Marlene worked at Goodyear Bank and Goodyear until her retirement in 1997. She played fast pitch softball from the age of 11 into her 40’s, primarily as catcher. Her greatest and proudest moment was her induction into the Akron Amateur Softball Hall of Fame in 1987.
She enjoyed her church activities and friends at Goodyear Heights Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling, especially to Marco Island. Marlene was funny and feisty and never met a stranger.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 11:00 am, at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home and Chapel, 760 E. Market St., with Pastor D. Edward Witchey officiating. Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service, from 10 – 11 am. Burial at Tallmadge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Goodyear Heights Baptist Church, 1767 Goodyear Blvd., Akron, OH 44305 or the Summit County Softball Hall of Fame, 1575 Firestone Pkwy, Akron, OH 44301.
