April 29, 1947 ~ September 24, 2016 (age 69) 69 Years Old

Karen Ann King, 69, passed away peacefully at her home on September 24, 2016.  She was born on April 29, 1947 in Akron, Ohio.  Karen was a lifelong resident of Akron and will be missed by her family and friends. Karen graduated from Akron East High School and the University of Akron where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education.  She went on to teach, coach and mold lives for the next 38 years at Akron Garfield High School.  Karen was the first female golf coach in the City Series, and was the head coach of five different sports – basketball, volleyball, golf, softball and track.  Her teams earned multiple City Series championships during her coaching career.  Karen was inducted into the Akron East High School Hall of Fame for her efforts in basketball and volleyball, and the Women’s Tri-County Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, both in 1995. One of the most important things to Karen that came out of her 38 years of teaching was the amazing friends that she made.  Karen was also a huge Indians, Cavaliers and Buckeyes fan.  Karen loved to golf, golf and even golf some more.  Karen also found it important to give back to charities that were near and dear to her heart. Preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Alice King; and son-in-law John Henges, she is survived by children, Katherine Yoder-Henges (Steve Hunt) of New Port Richey, Florida and Alice Yoder-Woodruff (Geoffrey) of Copley; grandchildren, John, Sophia, Caroline, Julia and James; brother, James (Kathy) King of Macedonia, and sister Alice (Dana) Leasure of Greensboro, North Carolina. She is also survived by her close friend Tracey Lynn along with many nieces and nephews, and her extended family and friends.
